More than 1,200 specialists in the area of radiation research are due to participate in a major international conference on the subject in Dublin this week.

The psychiatrist and broadcaster Prof Anthony Clare opened the conference yesterday. Among the topics for debate are radon gas, UV rays and skin cancer, electromagnetic fields, "Radioactivity and the Irish Sea", and the impact of radiation on air crews. Hosted by the Dublin Institute of Technology, the conference is being held at UCD's Belfield campus.
