MEPs this month approved a plan that will enable disabled people to park their cars throughout the EU using a standard EU-parking card. Tom Megahy (UK, PES), who himself is partially disabled, said the card was needed because of the proliferation of varying national cards. They cause confusion and result in traffic inspectors not recognising cards from another country. To guard against misuse, the card will apply to a person and not a vehicle but it will be left for each member state to decide on the definition of disability.
Social Affairs Commissioner Padraig Flynn welcomed the move as a small but significant step forward that would help with free movement for disabled drivers.
