Brussels - The European Commission said yesterday it had added 1 million euros to international efforts to help Mozambique and Botswana cope with ruinous floods.

The aid will enable the Spanish and German branches of the Red Cross humanitarian organisation and the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres-Luxembourg to carry out relief operations over the next six months. Portugal, current EU president, separately pledged €2 million to Mozambique, its former colony.

The relief agency Concern is allocating £100,000 for emergency relief in Mozambique and has appealed for donations from the public. The Department of Foreign Affairs has given Concern a grant of £79,000 to help fund the emergency work. The phone number for donations is 1850 410510.
