Minister for Training and Skills Ciarán Cannon said he would submit a new European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) application to retrain former staff at the Waterford facility.

Management gave shocked workers just 30 days’ notice its Irish operation would close last Friday.

Mr Cannon said the feasibility of applying for EGF support had been discussed with Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton, State and support agencies and the company.

“This department will now proceed to prepare such an [EGF] application,” the Minister said.

Ireland has made three successful applications for the EGF scheme after job losses at Dell, Waterford Crystal and SR Technics.
