MEXICO CITY – Police arrested a taxi driver believed to be a member of Basque separatist group Eta who had quietly lived in Mexico for more than two decades.

Luis Miguel Ipiña Doña, known as Torero(the bullfighter), fled Spain to prevent arrest for his links to Eta and settled in the industrial state of Queretaro, Spain's ABCnewspaper said on its website.

Mexican La Jornada newspaper said the arrest was made on the outskirts of Mexico City based on suspicion Ipiña Doña was smuggling guns.

A spokeswoman for Mexico’s attorney general office said she could not confirm the detainee’s nationality or links to Eta, or say why he was arrested. She said the man was presented before an agency in the attorney general’s office that specialises in organised crime, including drug trafficking and terrorism.
