Ennis business people and residents affected by recent flooding are to take legal action against the town council over the damage.

After a public meeting attended by more than 100 people, members of the Mill Street and Parnell Street Traders' Association agreed to institute legal proceedings against the council. It is estimated that £500,000 worth of damage was caused. A Limerick legal firm has already been retained. The association is also calling for an independent inquiry to investigate management by the council of the flooding.

The Ennis town clerk, Mr Tomas Ryan, said he would not comment on the association's move until he saw the allegations made.
