England cricket captain Michael Vaughan was today coming to terms with his side's 10-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka in the first one-day international in Dambulla.

England managed to better their worst ever all-out one-day international total of 86 by just two runs as they struggled on an awkward, slow pitch at the new venue.

Sri Lanka's bowlers proved relentless and former captain Sanath Jayasuriya added insult to injury with a rapid, unbeaten 46 as the hosts completed the landslide victory in less than 14 overs.

Vaughan offered no excuses, admitting: "We did not come out of the blocks - we were probably in it for about 1.2 overs. We lost wickets at regular intervals and just did not post a total."

"I didn't expect it to be as tough as it has been today. Full credit to Sri Lanka - they were exceptional today. We will make sure we regroup and put in a better performance (in the second match) on Friday."

England went into today's game - their first on their tour of Sri Lanka - on the back of a Test match and limited-overs demolition of Bangladesh.
