Funding for organisations supporting Irish emigrants will total €11.6 million this year, according to Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore.
Last year 114 organisations in Britain received funding of €7.8 million out of a total fund of €11.3 million for Irish organisations worldwide.
The funding was provided under the Emigrant Support Programme, which focuses on “supporting culturally sensitive frontline welfare services targeted at the most vulnerable members of our overseas communities”.
In reply to a parliamentary question from Dublin Mid-West Labour TD Joanna Tuffy about Irish aid to Britain, Mr Gilmore said more than €68 million had been spent between 2004 and 2011 in Britain to tackle homelessness and social isolation.
