ARREST:A FRENCH waiter appeared in court yesterday after he was arrested for trying to pelt France's president Nicolas Sarkozy with eggs on his arrival at Government Buildings.

Michael Audran (35), with an address at Drumderg, Drumshambo, Co Leitrim, who has been residing in Ireland for about three years, was brought before Dublin District Court.

Garda Sgt Paul Tallon said Audran was charged with engaging in threatening, insulting and abusive behaviour. Audran indicated he was pleading guilty.

Sgt Tallon told Judge Denis McLoughlin that a security cordon was set up but that Audran "attempted to break through and throw eggs. He managed to throw one which missed the car."

The judge was told Audran had no previous convictions and earned €230 a week. Judge McLoughlin said the charges would be struck out if Audran paid €150 to charity. Outside the court Audran pulled the French and Breton flags, and made an abusive comment about Sarkozy.
