Young people, and school-goers in particular, have been targeted by the Irish Energy Centre as special people for whom ENERGY AWARENESS WEEK is of particular importance. The week of activities started on Sunday.

Next Friday is Energy Watch Day - this is a special energy-saving programme geared towards primary schools. Encouraging pupils to be more energy-conscious at school and at home, they will be provided with energy packs which allow teachers to work with students on the efficient use of energy. The packs includes copies of a beautifully-illustrated book on energy in our daily lives.

Energy Link is a new feature of the school programme which fosters links between 10 local industries and 10 schools in different parts of the State. Students learn about local industries, their products and processes, energy consumption and their environmental impact.

A special exhibition which has been running at ENFO, the Environmental Informartion Service in Andrew Street, Dublin, will continue until September 26th.

On the school programme for the week, Sinead Begley, education officer with the Irish Energy Centre, says: "It's important to recognise the role that young people can play in promoting energy efficiency. It's our belief that children who are receiving an active energy education will be potent influencers in the home, prompting for greater adoption of the energy efficiency message. We would appeal to and encourage schools and teachers to participate in this very important programme."
