The latest study guide aimed at Transition Year and senior students of German has just produced by the Film Institute of Ireland to coincide with screenings of Das Versprechen (The Promise) at venues around the State in the New Year. This romantic epic gives an insight into recent German history. Made in 1995, the film the story of Sofie and Konrad who live on the east side of Berlin in 1962. It traces their story up to 1989 when the Berlin Wall fell.

The film provides an opportunity for language study as well as addressing the Landeskunde element of the Leaving Cert programme. The guide has been made possible with the support of Elke Hughes, the German advisor to the Department of Education.
