A tough campaign to target motorists in the vicinity of schools is being called for by parents in New South Wales, Australia. The NSW Parents and Citizens' Association (NSWPCA) was responding to the results of a survey carried out by the Australian motoring association. Thousands of vehicles are travelling over the 40 kilometre per hour speed limit which operates around schools. In the survey carried out last week, 80 per cent of the 458 drivers in a restricted zone adjacent to a Sydney School were clocked travelling above the speed limit.
Bev Baker, president of the NSWPCA, said: "We need to spend money to change drivers' behaviour with a campaign that says something like: `You intend to kill a child if you drive past a school over the speed limit."'
