USIT is no longer the only agent for J1 visas for students from the Republic. The Cork-based SAYIT (Student and Youth International Travel), part of the Shandon Travel group, commenced its involvement in the J1 programme last year and this year hopes to offer up to 1,000 J1 places. Trevor Ryan, manager of SAYIT, believes that the market is big enough for SAYIT and USIT. "We are selling ourselves on a very good pre-arranged programme," says Trevor Ryan, manager of SAYIT. "It's a small company and we pride ourselves on the personal and individual service we give."
SAYIT is flying out of Dublin, Shannon and Cork (via London) this year, on various dates in June. It differs slightly from USIT in that, in addition to the standard programme, it offers students a travel option which includes a pre-arranged job and accommodation, based on an agreement reached with a number of US golf and country clubs. Wages vary from $6.50 per hour for those who live on-site - which involves getting accommodation and food covered - to $10-plus per hour for those who opt to live elsewhere. In addition, employers have promised an $800 bonus to students who stay for their agreed full term of employment.
The programme fee for this option is slightly more expensive than the regular programme fee (£251 as opposed to £151). Otherwise, SAYIT's rates are similar to USIT's. SAYIT also operates a third programme, whereby its US cooperator arranges jobs and accommodation in the retail or leisure sector.
