I'm a refugee from the sixties. I normally wear very casual clothes - jeans or corduroys and a sweater - and shoes that don't match. I certainly never wear a suit. I do have one though - it's the suit I was married in 25 years ago and it's now a size too small. I also have a set of tails which I wear when I'm conducting.

I guess it's a good time in my life to change - at least my children think so - and it might be fun. I'm open to suggestion and I'll go with the flow. The only thing I've insisted on is the beard. It stays - I've had it since 1969 and can't imagine myself without it. I'd also have to shave every morning, which I'd hate. I've never owned a razor. Most people know me with long hair but I suppose I don't mind having it cut a bit. Otherwise I'd wear anything and any colour for a bet.

I was delighted to be asked to be part of this project; any girl would love to have a makeover done. Anything that improves your image is great. I love clothes and getting dressed up and I'm willing to try anything. In primary school you have to wear clothes that are practical and comfortable. You're dealing with chalk, paints, glue and markers. There are 35 children in my class and the classroom is small - we're on top of each other. Your clothes can be destroyed, but at the same time you want to look smart.

Kids like you to be in colour. They're very aware of labels and will tell you if something is cool or not. I wouldn't wear black because I think it's very morbid.

I'm looking forward to the makeover and I plan to be out on the town on the night.
