Eanna Ni Lamhna, of Mooney Goes Wild fame, is the project leader of a recyling programme taking place in more than 200 of the State's primary schools. Organised by local education centres, and using materials designed by the Blackrock Education Centre, the programme encourages students to study how plastic is made and used, particularly in packaging. The recycling element involves the collection of plastic ring carriers, the kind which hold drink cans together. Once collected in sufficient numbers, these are sent back to the factory they came from in Mallow, Co Cork.
Last year, 250,000 such ring carriers were collected, with Fenor National School in Waterford topping the poll - they collected 15,000. Your local education centre will tell you more, or try the Blackrock centre at (01) 2300977 or (01) 2301610.
