A fund-raising venture over the last three months involving the sixth class boys of CBC Junior School in Monkstown, Co Dublin, will culminate in a business exhibition at their school today. And the Minister for Education and Science, Micheal Martin, has promised to attend the display of their products. The boys aim to raise money to help pay for the transport of children from Chernobyl to Ireland for one month's holiday in July. This is the fourth year of the enterprise. The current total raised this year by the class of 36 boys, who are all in the 11 to 12 age group, is £7,200. Each group or company will display its product or service and business plan and all the day's proceeds will go to the Children of Chernobyl fund.
Nature lovers should check out the 11th edition of an environmental magazine, which highlights the degradation of the planet at local, national and international level, which will be available shortly in Blackrock, Co Dublin. Produced by the Transition Year students of Blackrock College, Green Watch is to be launched by the Minister for the Environment, Noel Dempsey, this Thursday. It will be sold in the Blackrock Shopping Centre and in the Frascati Centre at £2 per copy. There will be a print-run of 1,000, according to Michael O'Carroll, a member of the editorial team.
Here's a newsflash about two new courses that might change the career paths of some Leaving Cert students, even if they have already filled in the CAO form. Remember that the change of mind application deadline through the CAO is Thursday July 1st. One new course is at TCD - a new honours degree course in "medicinal chemistry" (TR075), which will start in October. It's designed to fill a need in the pharmaceutical industry. The second new course is at DIT - a BA (Hons) Photography, which is aimed at students who wish to study photography to degree level. The winner of the individual award in the All-Ireland Esso Wildlife Challenge was Rory Marlow, a pupil at St Patrick's Primary School, Eskra, Omagh, Co Tyrone. Ballycahill National School in Thurles, Co Tipperary, was the overall award. Dr Mo Mowlam presented the award.

Dublin dwellers should not delay if they want to enter an annual award competition run by Guinness. Entries must be in this Friday, for any person, group, school or business in Dublin to enter the 1999 Guinness Living Dublin Awards. The aim of the awards, which were introduced in 1994, is to encourage civic participation in the enhancement of Dublin. A prize fund of £15,000 will be divided among five category winners and the overall winner. This Friday is the closing date for schoolchildren to enter (through their teacher) the "Fun with Fruit and Vegetables" art competition, which has been launched by An Bord Glas, the Horticultural Development Board. The two categories are Junior infants to second class, and third class to sixth class. The first prize is a family holiday to Trabolgan Holiday Centre in Cork. Each pupil has to drawn his or her own fruit and vegetable cartoon character on an A3 size page with a slogan which aims to encourage children to eat more fruit and vegetables. Young art students who have their eyes set on third level may like to visit this year's Crawford College of Art & Design Degree Show in Cork. The show runs from Friday, June 18th to Monday, June 28th and features the diverse range of creative work from the 39 student in the degree class. As emerging artists, traditional methods are combined with new technologies in the making of their art.
