DIT Research Ethics Seminar

The Dublin Institute of Technology is hosting a seminar entitled "Research Ethics: Challenges and Dilemmas" on Friday, May 14th. The seminar will run from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and researchers in any discipline are welcome. Free University of Ireland Seminars

Deiric O Broin and Brendan Williams will talk on "Implementing the National Spatial Strategy" today at 7.30 p.m. at the Saor-Ollscoil Building, 55 Prussia Street, Dublin 7. Tomorrow, also at 7.30 p.m., Thomas Daffern and Sean English will give a semiar on "Being Steadfast in the Eye of the Storm: On the work of Peace Studies and Philosophy in Ireland and Britain - Where Do We Go From Here?"

Academic Network on Entrepreneurship

A new organisation called Ireland's Network of Teachers and Researchers of Entrepreneurship (INTRE) has been established. The primary aims of the network are to increase the quantity and quality of research and writing on entrepreneurship in Ireland, to improve enterprise education and to give the Irish academic community increased representation and recognition.

Each third-level institution is represented on the board and any academic who is working or interested in the area of entrepreneurship is eligible to join the network. For details, e-mail thomas.cooney@dit.ie

New Irish Programme at DCU

In response to the introduction of the Official Languages Act 2003, Fiontar at DCU is introducing a new postgraduate programme on bilingual practice. This can be taken at certificate, graduate diploma or master's level.

From May 1st, public bodies are legally obliged to increase their services in Irish to the public by publishing their annual reports and important documents in both languages.

Adult Learning Opportunities in UCC

The Centre for Adult Continuing Education at University College Cork recently launched its Lifelong Learning brochure for 2004-2005.

The brochure contains 46 programmes ranging from certificate courses in applied multimedia studies, disability studies, music and field ecology to diploma courses in development studies, European art history, personnel management and social studies.

EU Science Design Competition

Ireland's young artists are being invited to design the official poster for the 16th EU Contest for Young Scientists, which will be held in Ireland for the first time in September 2004. The two categories are for students aged 12 to 15 and for students aged 15 to 18. The theme is "Science in Ireland". and the overall winning design will be the official poster for the EU Contest for Young Scientists. The winning designs will be posted on the website www.eucontestireland.com.

The overall winner will receive 300, with second prize receiving 200. The closing date for receipt of entries is Friday, May 28th. Send entries to: EU Contest for Young Scientists Design Competition, Garden Level, 35 Yellow Walls Road, Malahide, Co Dublin.

Online Applied Behaviour Analysis Course

Ireland's first online course in ABA - Applied Behaviour Analysis - will be launched on May 10th and will be available on the Internet until June 18th. ABA has a wide range of applications, which include teaching children with developmental disabilities such as autism and Down's syndrome, parenting and intervention with problem behaviours.
