Sixth year Leaving Cert students who intend studying medicine next year are invited to attend an open day on Monday, December 20th, in UCD's Medical School. A scholarship scheme at Tralee IT has just been launched to encourage students to do more science subjects. The college's Millennium Science Scholarships for Leaving Cert students will be awarded to the student registering on the appropriate course in the college with the highest CAO points. The three courses which come under this new scheme are applied biology, applied chemistry and photonics. The scholarship, which is valued at £1,000, is being piloted this year. According to Dr Noel Mulligan, head of the Chemical and Life Sciences Department at the college: "It is vital that we promote science in second-level schools at every opportunity . . . Science is a living subject that touches our everyday lives, while Tralee IT science graduates take up employment with world market leaders based in Ireland every year."

Images of war as seen through the eyes of children are currently showing at an exhibition in Dublin. School students may like to check out the Reuters Foundation photographic exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland at Collins Barracks this month. The collection comprises some 140 photographs, including 80 taken by children living in conflict zones and 60 by professional photographers in Kosovo. The exhibition, entitled Inside: Outside will run until next Sunday, December 12th. It is open Tuesday to Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and on Sunday between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Information packs and entry forms will be arriving at primary schools shortly for young people who want to enter the ESSO Wildlife Challenge. It's up and running again this year and open to children who enter through a youth clubs or their school class - they must be in the age group that attend fourth, fifth and sixth classes in the Republic of Ireland and Primary fifth, sixth and seventh classes in Northern Ireland. The theme this year is "wildlife and your local patch" and children are asked to look at ways they can improve their local park, garden or school. The prizes include an especially commissioned painting and a selection of wildlife books. The closing date this year is March 24th, 2000.

There will be just two performances of a play for children between the ages of 6 to 12 tomorrow at the Garter Lane Arts Centre in Waterford. Gozel The Brave, The Making of a Hero is written and directed by Liam Meagher. Tickets are £2 each.
