FAS offers a 30-week course in fashion design, enterprise and technical skills. There are 14 places and the course includes work experience, explains instructor Mark Cummins. For admisson, you need motivation and a portfolio rather academic achievement. "Somebody who is possibly not academic may have wonderful skills." Applicants are interviewed and also do some tests on space and shape aptitudes - and a colour blindness test. The course includes pattern making, styling, design, and illustration. As well as technical subjects, they do enterprise skills and marketing. Graduates may also set up on their own, says Cummins. If there is a "good gelling" between various people on the course, they are encouraged to think of forming a co-operative.
The course held a fashion show in Jervis Street Shopping Centre, Dublin, a few weeks ago. Cummins hopes that this type of event will become a staple.
