Mocks can help to refine choices

IT'S that time of year again. Students across the country are getting results of the Mock Junior and Leaving Cert exams. It's a time of major decision making for some who feel that course choices made in February may now seem somewhat ambitious. However, all is not lost if Leaving Cert students take time to think about alternative course options which in most cases are available through certificate diploma degree routes at all regional technical colleges across the country. Having spoken to countless students over the years I have encountered many who have contemplated repeating examinations in order to get a place in an ab-initio degree programme at universities.

Students, parents and teachers should view the RTC system of national certificate and diploma courses as building blocks which can lead to a degree qualification if desired. Courses in RTCs are quite varied and range from two year certificate, 3 year ab-initio diploma, 4 year ab-initio degree and 1 and 2 year add on diploma and degree programmes.

To progress from certificate to diploma students need a merit or a pass with one year's relevant work experience. Some colleges may be more flexible and accept a high pass alone. To enter a degree programme students must get a merit in their diploma examinations. Students, parents and teachers should realise that every RTC now offers degree and post graduate programmes in the general areas of business studies, the humanities hotel & catering, science and engineering. Some of these degree programmes are more specialised while others are of a more general nature and all are capable of being reached through the certificate>diploma>degree route.

While many students have degree aspirations, not all want to spend four years in college studying for a degree. The national certificate itself is still a valid stand alone qualification, with excellent job opportunities in areas such as engineering and computing where at present it's difficult, because of job opportunities, to retain students to diploma and degree level.

FOR students who leave at national certificate or national diploma stage, most colleges can provide part time opportunities to study at diploma/degree level. The ability to leave at an intermediate stage with a recognised qualification is a major advantage that the certificate diploma degree has over an ab-initio degree. Many people can focus on their career choice and return to the education system to resume studies that suit their personal circumstances.

The RTC system that was instituted over 25 years ago was very forward thinking and out of this has developed a very flexible approach to third level education. This system has produced tens of thousands of highly qualified graduates for Irish industry and continues to do so.

So remember that a very flexible education system exists for you if you plan your course choices in a proper way. If you plan to change your course choices by the May and July change of mind deadlines, do get sound career advice and don't ignore opportunities that are available to you.
