Who does the course?

People come from a variety of backgrounds. Many are teachers, librarians or people working in the media, who wish to enhance their careers by increasing their understanding of children's literature. Some people simply have a long-held interest in the subject or wish to direct their careers towards childcare. Often, parents have developed an interest as a result of reading with their children. Some people, too, are keen to write for children. Already, one student has published a children's book which began life as a creative project for the course.

Course content:

Children's classics, poetry, contemporary children's literature from Ireland, Britain, North America, Australia and South Africa; critical theory and children's literature; traditional story, myth, legend and fairy tale; the art of the picture book and illustration.

First-year students are required to write critical essays and do project work. In second year, students write a minor thesis on a topic of their own choice.
