About 1,000 students at Carlow IT have marched through the town to protest the disruption to classes caused by the closure of a temporary building on their campus. The building was closed because of the college authorities' failure to ensure it was certified for fire safety in time for the second semester.

The rally, which went from the Carlow IT campus to the Potato Market in the centre of Carlow last Wednesday, was a protest at the college's actions, not a call on the local council to allow the building to be reopened, said students' union president D J Moore.

While the union is still receiving complaints about disruption caused by the building's closure, design students returned to classes last week after their boycott of classes to protest inadequate temporary facilities.
