AIR CORPS cadetships are traditionally highly sought after. Each year, a maximum of four or five Air Corps cadets are taken on. Advertisements for cadet ships should be in the national newspapers shortly.
As with Aer Lingus, the selection procedure is rigorous, including assessment tests, interviews, medial and physical examinations.
In addition to height requirements there are specific leg and arm measurements needed. Unaided hearing is essential as is good eyesight.
The Air Corps has more than 40 aircraft including helicopters. Day to day peace time activities include providing ministerial air transport, maritime surveillance, fishery protection, search and rescue and air ambulance.
After a two-year training course, cadets who satisfactorily complete the military and flying instruction are eligible for a commission as second lieutenant. This is initially a 12-year commission but officers can apply to have this extended to a commission with no time limitation.
