What do the Harrow, Three Rocks, Oulart Hill, Goffs Bridge and Tubberneering have in common? They are the names of some of the key battlefields in the 1798 rebellion. Information about 1798 including the ballads and poems about the insurrection, facsimile documents, biographical details of some of the main leaders and the contribution of women as well as the flags and weaponry from the rebellion, are all documented in a new pack which has been produced by Wexford Co Council to commemorate the bicentenary.
Exploring 1798 is an introduction to the Rebellion in Co Wexford. The pack provides information on the causes, the context, the events and accounts of the battles. Every school in Co Wexford will get a free copy of the pack this month as part of the county's schools' library service.
The pack is suitable for late primary and second-level students up to and including Transition Year. It's the culmination of six months' collaboration between local teachers, historians and the the schools' library service. Priced at £10, it's available from Wexford Co Council. Teachers are invited to apply for one of 26 in-service courses to be held in different parts of Europe between January and July next year. Funding of about £1,160 is available under the EU Socrates programme. According to Leargas - the Exchange Bureau, the courses will cover topics ranging from "developing the inclusive classroom through collaborative learning" to education for European citizenship' and "using new technologies to create a common European syllabus." Applications must be received by Friday, May 22nd. Business 2000
Closing Date for The Irish Times Business 2000 IMAX Competition has been extended by one week. Entries can now be sent up to next Friday. Entry forms have already been sent to business studies teachers at schools. Forms can also be copied for individual entries. Prizes for students, teachers and schools include a trip for four to New York. Entrants have to use their imagination and create an advertising idea for the launch of a new IMAX theatre in Dublin.
