An e-town is a centre of about 1,000 people in which Shannon Development hopes to develop small clusters of units where the owner-occupier would live and work.

What is so special about that?

The units have fast access broadband communications and are aimed at creative professionals such as architects, advertising executives and designers, who might typically have to go to cities to seek work.

Can anyone apply?

Yes. You must have the unit as your principal private residence and keep it for at least two years.

Do I need to be single?

No. The towns have been carefully selected to have good schools for children; as the concept is to promote the wellbeing of the town, a vibrant family life is welcome but not an absolute. Unit sizes vary.

Does it work?

There is only one in operation in Miltown Malbay which Shannon Development says is a success.

Are there others planned?

Yes. E-towns are in various stages of development in a number of towns in the region including Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West in Co Limerick; Kilrush and Miltown Malbay in Co Clare; Nenagh, Roscrea and Templemore in Co Tipperary; and Banagher and Birr in Co Offaly. The organisation has this week lodged a planning application for its latest e-town based at Tarbert in Co Kerry.
