Dublin Fire Brigade says TCD fire 'contained'

The Dublin Fire Brigade has said the fire at Trinity College Dublin has been contained. The fire brigade is still treating the fire, which broke out at the Chemical Department at the college, as a chemical incident and has set up a decontamination area at the scene.

The blaze broke out in the Chemistry Department in the Hamilton Building shortly before 7pm. Witnesses reported thick black smoke covering the Sciences end of the college.

The affected building is near Lincoln Place, which is near Nassau Street, and the college's Lincoln Gate entrance has been closed to all traffic.

Dublin Fire Brigade told ireland.comthat it was thought the blaze started in a store room on the roof of the Hamilton Building. The fire is being treated as a chemical fire at the moment as chemicals are known to be stored in the Hamilton building.

Firefighters at the scene are wearing protective chemical clothing. At least three engines and at twenty fire-fighters are at the scene. No casualties have been reported.

Although the fire has been contained, Dublin Fire Brigade indicated it could still take several hours to extinguish the fire.

Last October, a fire broke out  in the accommodation buildings in Front Square forcing some students on campus to be evacuated.
