When Fela Kuti strode the land with his Africa 70 outfit, Tony Allen was the band's musical director and the drummer who put the beat into Afrobeat. As Fela's righthand man, Allen ensured that Afrobeat's blend of jazz, soul, funk and traditional west African sounds was as boogieful as they come. Now, with such US house dons as Masters At Work and Joe Claussell putting their spin on Afrobeat rhythms and four solo albums from Allen on re-release, the time seems right for his new outfit Afrobeat 2000. Joining them tonight at Dublin's City Centre Arts Centre are world-jazz-jive DJing legends Max Reinhardt and Rita Ray from The Shrine in London. Get there early because this really is a hot ticket.
