Households were urged to think green this Christmas as people prepare to drink their way through millions of bottles of wine and beer.

As the Repak Green Christmas Campaign got under way, people were called upon to use their recycling bins rather than sending items to overflowing landfill sites.

During the festive period it is estimated Irish households will use 45 million plastic drinks bottles.

Repak estimated the number of gifts under trees would result in four million rolls of wrapping paper being used and 2.5 million cardboard toy boxes.

It is anticipated people will consume the contents of 20 million wine bottles, 48 million aluminium beer cans, 35 million soft drinks cans, 13 million beer bottles and 2.5 million spirit bottles.

A Repak spokesman said: "All the packaging from these goods can be recycled through the Green Christmas campaign."
