A former moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland has criticised the Northern Executive’s draft programme for government, saying it “doesn’t go far enough” towards tackling unemployment and rectifying the financial situation.

Although it sets out targets for the Executive to tackle issues such as growing unemployment and shortfalls in the health budget, Dr Norman Hamilton said there were “glaring omissions”.

“Building a shared future is not simply about people being nice to each other,” he said. “It is absolutely about the economic wellbeing of this province and bringing jobs and hope and encouragement to considerable numbers of people who don’t have it.”

The programme features 10 “talking points” for Ministers, with job creation and improving the economy top of the agenda.
