Pretoria - The South African heart surgeon dubbed "Doctor Death" for leading the apartheid-era chemical and germ warfare programme pleaded not guilty yesterday to 61 charges of murder, fraud and drug peddling.

Dr Wouter Basson still practices medicine while out on 40,000 rand (£8,000) bail.

After the plea state prosecutors detailed how they planned to run the complex case, which is expected to take three years and draw in up to 200 witnesses from around the world.
