Nigerian police said today dozens of people had been killed in a petroleum pipeline explosion in the commercial capital Lagos early yesterday morning.

Witnesses said fires were still burning in the Ijegun district of the city where the explosion took place.

Police said the explosion happened as thieves attempted to siphon petrol from a pipeline belonging to state oil company NNPC.
