A young Irish woman was last night recovering in the emergency unit of Great Ormond Street Hospital in after undergoing a heart and lung transplant operation.
Ms Deirdre Roche (19), from Elm Green, Ardnore, Kilkenny, who suffers from cystic fibrosis, was registering for a business studies course at Carlow Regional College on Tuesday afternoon when the emergency call came through that suitable donor organs had been found for her. Ms Roche's sister, Orla (14), who also suffered from cystic fibrosis, died some time ago while on a donor waiting list.
