GARDAI in Donegal have described the "brutal" assault of a pensioner in his home by a lone intruder on Thursday.

Mr Willie Harrigan (84) sustained serious injuries to his head, neck and arms in the attack. His niece, Mrs Betty Corr, who was home on holiday from Boston, said her uncle would need plastic surgery.

"I just cannot believe that anyone would leave such an old man in such a condition," said Mrs Corr. "The injuries and pain Willie has suffered are just sickening. He was left to die like an animal by an animal. He has burn marks around his neck which were caused when his attacker apparently tried to strangle him.

"His head and face are a complete mess. Willie is unrecognisable. He is a lovely quiet man and thank God he was able to phone his neighbour, Margaret McCole, who raised the alarm," she said.

Gardai say the attack took place at 3 a.m. on Thursday at Mr Harrigan's home at Magherard near Quigley's Point.

"This was one of the most vicious attacks of its kind we have ever come across, said a Garda spokesman. "The intruder disturbed Willie and then subjected him to a horrendous beating. He is lucky to be alive.

"Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact our confidential phone 1800-666-111," said the spokesman.

The intruder may have stolen about £300 from Mr Harrigan after the assault.
