The authorities in the UK have warned dog-owners in infected areas to keep their animals under control as a further precaution against the spread of foot-and-mouth disease.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food said that any dogs in affected zones must be kept in a kennel or an enclosure from which they cannot escape, or otherwise be effectively secured.

Dogs running free may be seized by a local authority or by the police and treated as strays.
