A new strategy for tackling homelessness in Northern Ireland was unveiled today by Social Development Minister Mr Nigel Dodds.

Speaking at the announcement of the Housing Executive's new and comprehensive strategy he said: "Everyone must have access to a decent home within a stable and caring community.

The barriers homeless people faced in accessing services the rest of society took for granted had to be taken down, he said.

"The Housing Executive's new strategy will create a modern and effective service which can make a real difference to the lives of homeless people."

The strategy includes a commitment to reduce the Executive's dependency on bed and breakfast accommodation by 50 per cent.

There are also plans for an additional 250 units of temporary accommodation and an extra 180 units of supported accommodation.

Mr Dodds insisted homelessness was not just a housing issue but had implications for health and well-being, educational attainment and employment opportunities.
