THE MAN acquitted of the murder of two British soldiers has claimed his DNA was planted in the getaway car found after the killings.
Colin Duffy held a press conference at the weekend to state the charges, of which he was cleared the previous day, were “spurious”.
However he refused to condemn dissident republicans, saying if being a dissident meant opposing Sinn Féin and their peace strategy, he was “happy” to be one.
On Friday at Antrim Court, the Lurgan republican was found not guilty of the murders of sappers Patrick Azimkar and Mark Quinsey outside Massereene barracks in March 2009. His co-accused, Brian Shivers from Magherafelt, was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Judge Mr Justice Anthony Hart said he accepted Mr Duffy’s DNA was on a seatbelt buckle and latex glove tip found in the car. However, there was insufficient evidence beyond reasonable doubt to prove he was directly involved in the attack.
