Diver's body recovered from Killary fjord

The body of a sports diver who went missing in Killary harbour, Co Galway, at the weekend has been recovered.

The body of a sports diver who went missing in Killary harbour, Co Galway, at the weekend has been recovered.

Divers from the Garda water unit and sub-aqua clubs were searching for Gabriel "Texas" Ryan yesterday. His body was recovered at low water from the mouth of the fjord shortly before 3pm.

Mr Ryan was one of a party of three diving east of Inishbarna island at the mouth of the fjord on Sunday. When there was no sign of him surfacing, the alarm was raised.

Irish Coast Guard units, a Sikorsky helicopter, the RNLI and many volunteers were involved in the search. Mr Ryan was located close to where he was last seen.

Originally from Tuam, Mr Ryan had been living in London for 20 years.
