Four nurses employed in the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) and represented by the Irish Nurses Organisation(INO) have served notice of strike action on the college.
The strike is due to being next Monday, the week in which the college reopens.
The college nurses, all of whom are employed on a long-term temporary basis, are angry at the failure of DIT to make them permanent, in spite of the fact that the Department of Education and Science has sanctioned permanent posts.
"Having received sanction from the Department of Education and Science for permanent pensionable nursing positions, the college wrote back to the Department indicating that it was prepared to forego the nursing positions in favour of other posts in the student services area," Mr David Hughes, deputy general secretary of the Irish Nurses Organisation (INO), said.
"This is one of the worst examples of low standards in high places that I have come across in over 20 years as a Trade Union Official," Mr Hughes said.
The INO is calling on the Department of Education and Science to become directly involved in ensuring that the national agreement reached is honoured, he said.
A statement from the Department of Education and Science is expected later in the day.
