Stream International -  one of the most advanced contact centre operations in Northern Ireland - said it will recruit 450 people over the next couple of months after winning a substantial new contract.

We will be looking for people with good customer services experience and from all age groups - people with good empathy - now we are starting to chase silver surfers, as they call them, the older people getting into broadband.

A further 300 people will be recruited next year to cope with an expansion of work on the contract, meaning the current workforce will more than double.

Managing director Jeff Jennings said he was delighted at the expansion.

"This company set up in Derry in 1996 and is now the second-largest employer in the city," he said. "These jobs are being created after we won a new contract to provide product support for a broadband operation."

He said the company involved is UK-based, but that he could not reveal which one until an official announcement in the coming days.

"There will be a broad spectrum of jobs - the 450 are needed for October and are support staff. There will also be management and technical jobs as well.
