The number of people killed in road accidents in the past 10 days has now risen to 28, including seven deaths since Friday. Five people died in accidents on Saturday and two on Friday. On Saturday afternoon, two teenagers were killed and five people, including two children, were seriously injured when two cars collided head on in Co Longford, near the village of Kenagh.
The two people who died were passengers in a Nissan Sunny car and were named as Francis Callanan (15), from Spring Lawn in Longford town, and Ms Glenda Reilly (19), from St Margaret's Terrace, Ballymahon, Co Longford.
The driver and another passenger in the car were brought to Mullingar hospital, along with the woman and her two children, aged three and six, in the other vehicle, a Toyota Corolla. One of the children is described as very seriously ill and has been moved to a Dublin hospital.
Shortly before midnight on Saturday, a motorcyclist identified as Mr Keith Doolan (26) was killed in a collision with a pedestrian at Adamstown, Kilmeaden, Co Waterford. The injured pedestrian was brought to hospital.
In the early hours of Saturday, a woman died when the car in which she was a rear passenger hit a traffic island at the junction of Lower Camden Street and Charlotte Way in Dublin. She was named as Ms Ruth Boldsbury (26) from Old Bawn, Tallaght.
On Saturday also, a motorist died when her car and a lorry collided on the Clonmel to Kilkenny road at Mayladstown near Carrick-on-suir, Co Tipperary. Ms Bernadette Tobin from Carrick-on-Suir was driving towards Kilkenny when the accident occurred.
On Friday evening, a man in his late 40s was killed just outside Bruff, Co Limerick, when a car and jeep collided on the Croom road. The dead man was named as Dermot Carmody who was from Bruff.
Earlier the same day, a 35-yearold man died when two cars collided near Swords, Co Dublin, on the link road between Brackentstown road and Rathbeale road. He was Mr Martin Walsh from Portrane, Co Dublin.
