The death toll from a bus crash in central India rose to 56 today as 20 more bodies were recovered from a rain-swollen reservoir into which the vehicle plunged.

"We have recovered 56 bodies, including 15 children and 21 women. The bus has been pulled out," a senior official of Rewa district said.

The bus was packed with labourers returning to their villages in Madhya Pradesh state for the weekend Diwali festival.

Seven or eight people survived the crash, which happened when the driver lost control of the vehicle, and it skidded off the road.

Divers were used to drag the bodies out of the water-filled bus. Some people travelling on the roof of the bus died when they were trapped in slush near the reservoir.
