The death has taken place of Michael Carwood (52), a well-known Dublin journalist. He died suddenly in Greystones, Co Wicklow, yesterday.

He enjoyed a very successful career in sports journalism. He was sports editor of the Sunday Press from 1988 up until the paper's closure in 1995. He also worked as soccer correspondent for the paper.

Subsequently, he worked for The Irish Times and the Sunday Independent, and was involved in the development of sports websites. He also lectured in journalism at the Dublin Institute of Technology.

An avid golfer, he was captain of the Dublin Journalists' Golf Society for 2002. He was a native of Dundrum, Co Dublin, and lived in Greystones.

A musician and composer, he was a member of the group known as Telephone Bill and the Smooth Operators.

His best-known composition was Come On You Boys In Green, Ireland's anthem for the 1988 European Soccer Championship finals, the proceeds of which went to charity.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy, and by children Mark, Suzanne and Amanda.

As a mark of respect to its captain, the Dublin Journalists' Golf Society has postponed today's society event at Woodbrook and next Monday's event at the European Club.
