The death has taken place of Mgr Sean Leonard, a former parish priest of Swinford, Co Mayo, and vicar-general of the Diocese of Achonry. He was 77.
A native of Tubbercurry, Mgr Leonard was influential in the "Save the West" campaign with Canon James McDyer of Glencolumbkille in the 1960s.
The Bishop of Achonry, Dr Thomas Flynn, was the main celebrant of a Requiem Mass yesterday before Mgr Leonard was laid to rest in the church grounds in Swinford.
