American actor and director Robert De Niro will preside over the over the nine-member jury panel  at the Cannes film festival this year, it was announced today.

Raging Bull actor De Niro has already been the festival's jury chief twice in the 1980s and will take charge of the 64th edition held May 11-22.

De Niro has presented eight films at the Cannes Film Festival during his career, winning the coveted Palme d'Or award for Taxi Driver (1976) and The Mission (1986).

"As co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival and the Doha Tribeca Film Festival I have an increased appreciation for the jury who serve, undertaking an important role in choosing films that are represented in the world of film at its highest level," De Niro said in a statement.
