The family of a member of An Garda Síochána killed with a colleague has been awarded €900,000 in damages by the High Court.

Eilish Rice Gilcaught, Vicarstown, Co Cork, brought the action on her own behalf and that of her children, Elaine (20), Laura (18) and Kieran (15), following the death of her husband, Garda George Rice (45) in a crash on April 22nd, 2001.

Garda Rice, stationed at Mallow Road Garda station in Cork city, was in a patrol car being driven by colleague Garda Seamus McIntyre, which went out of control on the North Ring Road. Mr Justice Kevin Feeney approved the settlement.

Last week, Ms Justice Mary Finlay Geoghegan approved a settlement of €75,000 by the Garda authorities to the late Garda McIntyre's father, Patrick, and other family members.
