Customs officers yesterday seized five million contraband cigarettes valued at €1.5 million in a warehouse near the Border. They were in a container that had been declared as "frozen vegetables" which was delivered to Drogheda, Co Louth.
A man with an address in Co Monaghan is helping with investigations. A Customs spokesman said a Scania truck and refrigerated trailer were impounded during the operation. It is thought the cigarettes originated in Ukraine and travelled by sea from Odessa to Dublin via Rotterdam.
Meanwhile, the PSNI has seized a large quantity of cigarettes and documents in an investigation into money laundering and organised crime. One man was arrested following a raid in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, yesterday morning.
Warrant for alleged road rage
A warrant was issued yesterday for the arrest of a man after he failed to turn up in court on charges relating to an alleged road rage incident.
Darren Gilligan (29) is accused of two assault causing harm charges, possession of a baseball bat with intent to cause injury, and breach of the peace at Parkgate Street, Dublin.
Denis O'Brien court appeal
Judgment was reserved by the Supreme Court yesterday on an appeal by businessman Denis O'Brien against the High Court's refusal to grant him leave to challenge the Moriarty tribunal's decision to hear evidence relating to his interest in the purchase of Doncaster Rovers ground in England.
