Cross-Border groups to get €1.3m in funding

Some 39 groups involved in cross-Border reconciliation projects are to receive grants totalling €1

Some 39 groups involved in cross-Border reconciliation projects are to receive grants totalling €1.3 million from the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern said the grants would be paid to a wide range of groups involved in cross-Border community and reconciliation work.

The grant recipients include Arts for All, a community arts organisation, which encourages participation in the arts in the "interface" areas of north Belfast. Co-operation Ireland, one of the largest organisations working in the area of reconciliation, received €340,000, one of the largest grants.

Speaking at a reception in Belfast yesterday, Mr Ahern said: "I believe that this grant-aid represents a further expression of the Government’s commitment to the values of partnership and reconciliation at the heart of the Good Friday Agreement.

He told the community groups he hoped the funding would allow them to consolidate and expand their valuable efforts.

"I am aware that your work is often carried out in difficult and challenging circumstances and today’s grant-aid of over €1.3 million reflects the Government’s deep appreciation for your dedication and commitment.

"Your quiet but constant contribution resonates wider than your own communities and plays a vital role in underpinning wider political efforts to achieve constructive engagement and agreement," Mr Ahern said.
