The Irish Penal Reform Trust and the Community Platform is co-hosting a seminar on the impact of increasing levels of social exclusion on crime and how crime disproportionately impacts on marginalised communities.
The seminar takes place this Thursday, February 2nd, in the Carmelite Community Centre, 56 Aungier Street, Dublin 2. Speakers include John Lonergan, former governor of Mountjoy Prison and patron of the trust; Kathleen Lynch, professor of equality studies at UCD; Tony Geoghegan, chief executive of Merchants Quay Ireland; Orla O’Connor of the National Women’s Council of Ireland, and Bríd O’Brien of the Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed.
A new position paper from the trust, The Vicious Circle of Social Exclusion and Crime: Ireland's Disproportionate Punishment of the Poor, will be launched at the seminar.
