Conference on immigration and asylum

A conference on aspects of asylum and immigration law, organised by the Bar Council, will take place on Saturday, November 28th in St Michan’s Church, Church Street, Dublin, starting at 9.30am.

The keynote speaker is Mark Symes, of Garden Court Chambers, an expert in the area of refugee and immigration law, who will address refugee law and subsidiary protection.

This conference will also discuss key issues ranging from assessments of credibility, recent developments in Strasbourg and Luxembourg jurisprudence, to the protection of victims of trafficking.

The conference will be chaired by John Finlay SC and speakers include Mark DeBlacam SC, Sara Moorhead SC and Colm ODwyer BL. It costs €150 and bookings may be made on the Law Library website or by e-mailing cpd@lawlibrary.ie. Attendance merits three CPD points.

Legal seminars in UCD

Brendan O’Leary, Lauder professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania and United Nations expert on power-sharing, will address the topic of “Departing Responsibility from Iraq”, this Thursday at 5pm in the UCD Legal Education Centre, Belfield, Dublin 4 (Fosters Avenue entrance). Prof O’Leary will also address an all-day conference on a charter of rights this Friday in Newman House.

US firm opens Dublin office

The US-based legal firm Holmes Roberts and Owen Solicitors has opened an office in Dublin. Founded in 1898, it has offices in a number of West coast cities in the US, and the Dublin office is its third in Europe, the others being in Munich and London.

The partners in the Dublin office are James Wolsey and Tony Grant, and Kate O’Brien, formerly of Arthur Cox, has also joined the firm.

Hugh Fitzpatrick lecture on 1916

The annual Hugh M Fitzpatrick lecture will be given by Prof WJ Mc Cormack, keeper, Edward Worth Library, on “Print and Legitimation in 1916: the Activities of Joseph Mary Plunkett”. It takes place in the Dublin City Library and Archive in 138-144 Pearse Street, this Thursday, starting at 6pm, and will be followed by a wine reception.

Amnesty Book to be launched

Former president and UN Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson will launch From the Republic of Conscience: Stories inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rightsthis Friday in the National Library.

Published by Amnesty International, the book contains stories by prominent writers. The event will include a reading from Roddy Doyle.
