Fourth symposium on legal education

The fourth legal education symposium will be hosted by the School of Law at University of Limerick on May 14th. The plenary sessions will discuss the Purpose of a Law Degree and the Promotion of Legal Research. Speakers will include Dr John Temple Lang of Cleary Gottlieb Steen Hamilton, Prof Sally Wheeler of Queens University Belfast and Prof Fiona Cownie of Keele University.

Lawyers in charity run for homeless

On Saturday May 15th, lawyers and staff from solicitors’ offices around the State will gather at the Law Society at Blackhall Place, Dublin, for the society’s annual charity event, the Calcutta Run.

The purpose of the gathering is to raise funds for the Peter McVerry Trust and Goal who help homeless children in Dublin and Calcutta. Further details on www.calcuttarun.com or by phone at 01-672 4846.

Prasifka to chair forum on competition law

The next competition law forum of the Irish Society for European Law takes place tomorrow, in the Distillery Building, Church Street, at 6.30pm. It will be chaired by Financial Services Ombudsman William Prasifka, with contributions from Michael Collins SC, Martin Hall of Alix Partners and Robin Noble of Oxera.

Seminar on EU legal obligations

Public Affairs Ireland is holding a half-day seminar for public servants on compliance with EU legal obligations and negotiating at the EU institutions on May 10th, from 9am to 1pm, in its office at 25 Mountjoy Square, Dublin 1.

Web section for mediator search

The Bar Council has introduced a new section to its website, Search for a Mediator. This allows a search of barristers who are accredited mediators and links to their profiles on the Law Library site.

The section contains information on each body the barrister is accredited by, their areas of specialisation and contact details.

Facilities are also available for mediation in the Arbitration Centre in the Distillery Building.

For the fourth time in five years, Matheson Ormsby Prentice has won the International Law Office Client Choice award in London. Partners Bonnie Costello, Noreen Howard and Robert O'Shea were individual winners for Ireland.
